Flames draft

After trading up from #7 and #10 to recieve the #2 overall, the Calgary Flames were ecstatic to find John Tavares, the future of their franchise, anxiously awaiting their pick. Matt Duchene was a healthy alternative to the pick, but Calgary Flames GM Tomayko was extremely excited to make the selection just seconds after the Islanders selected Duchene. Since March 9th, 2008, GM Tomayko had his eyes set on acquiring Tavares ( http://brhlcommish.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=tradeblock&thread=3106&page=1 ). "Although Mike Lee and Olivier Roy were not on our final draft boards at our current picks of the draft, they remain excelent prospects, and we had to make alternate plans such as selecting Tavares."

Trades during the season and offseason brought 3 of the first 8 picks in the 2nd round to Calgary. The Flames selected 1st round drops Louis Leblanc and Dylan Olsen as well as Carl Klingberg 2nd round prospect from Atlanta. "We had no plans on selecting Leblanc in the 2nd round. That in no way is disrespecting Louis. Before we traded up from 7 and 10, he was a definate choice for us there, and we were proud to select him at 31. Olsen was the expected pick at the 31 spot, but again we were fortunate to see him fall on our laps. As was Olsen, Klingberg was a pick ahead at the 34 spot, and the hockey gods knew the rest of the league would suffer by other teams not chosing Leblanc. We were granted our 2 players wanted at 31/34 as well as Louis."

All Flames selections in the draft are as follows with their grade:

(OVERALL PICK/NAME/GRADE/POSITION)
2 John Tavares 9.0C C
Tavares is a top-flight talent, perhaps not in the same class as a Sidney Crosby or Alex Ovechkin, but still a player you can build around. Yes, Tavares is not the fastest skater on the ice; yes, his defense -- while improving -- remains passable at best. But what can't be denied is Tavares' incredible hockey sense and offensive ability. Additionally, he showed some grit in playing effectively through an injured shoulder for the second half of the 2008-09 season. For a team searching for pure offensive ability, Tavares is a sure-fire bet in this year's draft.

31 Louis Leblanc 7.5C C
A talented two-way forward with good speed, he can go end to end and is a game-breaker at the USHL level. Welcomes physical play and isn’t afraid to go into the rough ends of the ice to produce. Does a good job in the corners and in tight around the net. A very good set of hands, can protect the puck well and create space. Needs to learn to be more north and south. Questions have been raised about his overall work ethic and commitment.

34 Dylan Olsen 7.5C D
Had the ability to take over games from the back end for the Camrose Kodiaks this season. Skates well for a big man. He isn't punishing physical but can over power the opposition when the need arises. Skates well and has shown the ability to move the puck on the rush. Was effective on the power-play this season but in order to be effect on the man advantage at the next level he will need to continue to develop his offensive instincts. Has a hard, accurate shot from the point. Played a lot of hockey in his draft year as he saw time at the World Under 18's, World Jr. A Challenge and the AJHL All-Star Game. His WHL rights belong to the Medicine Hat and some believe Tiger's Coach Willie Desjardins will go after him hard and possibly use a spot on the Junior National team as a selling point.

38 Carl Klingberg 7.5C RW
Klingberg's work ethic and his top notch skating skills are the strength of his game. He uses his significant size well and accelerates quickly. His technical skills and hockey sense are slightly above average, at best, but he loves driving to the net and creates a lof of scoring chances simply by using his quick feet. His biggest challenge will be to develop the patience and ability to recognize scoring opportunities more consistently.

Klingberg's intensity is especially apparent on the forecheck and his aggressivenss in all three zones make him a difficult player to play against. He has good timing in his hits and rarely puts himself out of the play despite his physical style of play.

75 Marc Cheverie 7.0D G
Cheverie, or Chevy, as his teammates like to call him, covers the net effectively with his 6’2” 193 lbs frame. He is quite athletic and has above average quickness with good reflexes for a goalie his size. He also likes to challenge shooters and takes an aggressive approach to goaltending. The fact that Cheverie is still at the age of 19 only playing Tier II in the BCHL may be a cause for concern regarding his ability to understand the position and develop accordingly.

84 Alex Chiasson 7.0C LW
Has a good blend of size and skill. Decent speed on his feet, but needs to work on skating, especially stride. Obviously needs to fill out his 6’3 frame. Can stickhandle through traffic with so much poise. Goes to the net, but will have to learn to get a bit grittier in close. Needs to be a little more patient in his own end. Likes to take off before team has secured possession. There are some concerns about his effort level.

94 Eric Gelinas 7.0C D
Gelinas displayed leadership qualities this past season in Lewiston, anchoring a mostly inexperienced blueline corps. He has some offensive ability, and has shown himself to be a responsible defensive player, as well. If a scout believes that there is some upside to his game, then Gelinas might be a wise selection for a team looking for a defenseman with size and overall ability.

120 Anders Nilsson 7.0D G
A huge goaltender that is technically skilled. Nilsson has good hockey smarts plays with calmness and has good mental strength. Challenges the shooters and has been very consistent during his career, rarely having bad games. Furthermore, he is athletic and quite agile.

124 Anton Klementyev n/a D
At this stage of development Anton Klementyev has to be considered a long shot for the NHL. His defensive awareness and his physical play will be surely helpful in his future, but first he has to earn some experience prior to really pursue an NHL career. He has been picked up in the CHL draft and there, in case he opts for reporting, could get some of the needed experience.

Although the Flames are not quite ready for any playoff or championship talks, the Flames have finally started rebuilding in the correct way.
