Isles Swap Malone For Abdelkader, Season 12 Second
Islanders Trade Malone For Justin Abdelkader and a Year 12 2nd Round Selection
The New York Islanders traded their best player this week. The Islanders are in full rebuild mode after dealing power forward Ryan Malone to the Montreal Canadiens of the BRHL. Malone was one of a very few bright spots for the Islanders last season, finishing with 21 goals and 30 assists to go along with 137 PIMs and 206 hits. His two-way game makes him an important piece to any contending team.
"We'll certainly miss Ryan on the ice and off, we wish him the best of luck in Montreal", said Isles GM John Devaney. "We are also very excited about the pieces we were able to add. Justin [Abdelkader] is a talented young player, who is blossoming into a two-way force. His compete level is off the charts, which is definitely something we were looking for, and his defensive game is very mature already. His offensive game has yet to really develop but we are confident it will", said Devaney.
Abdelkader's versatility can also play a role for the young Islanders. He is capable of playing both wings and center. Abdelkader has also shown himself to be an excellent skater, and can be very feisty and physical when he needs to be. The Islander also acquired a 2nd round selection in next season's Draft. That should be another important piece in the Islander re-build process.
